Gerry,

Excellent comment and I would tend to agree that ITSM solutions are becoming more open and integrated. However, these integrations often are at additional cost (consulting), are seperate modules or technologies, and I think worse, are data pipe integrations, not process integrations. Yes, I was "technically" integrating HP Service Desk to a number of systems and sources six years ago. But nothing managed the overall process as it was just a technical "data" integration. BPM incorporates and assumes integrations are part of an overall process.

This is an interesting article. Perhaps it is a little selective and exagerated in some of its arguments. I dont think there are many ITSM solutions that are as closed off as you suggest. This may have been true a few years ago but not anymore. I know most of the products in the ITSM space and I would say only a couple of them still suffer from the issues you raise here. The BPM argument is a bit utopian , very like ITIL for that matter.

Dirk,

I would agree - in the context of our solution (e-Service Desk), we are focused obviously more inward at the IT Organization. Yes, the BPM technology we leverage (primarily Metastorm) has found most of its success in the businss and not in IT. In fact, we don't find BPM that often in the IT Operations organization, until now!

"BPM is the definition, improvement and execution of an automated process"(see 1/ above)
In view of previous discussions about eg "Pure BPM" and similar (see outside-in) I think imho this BPM-definition is far too narrow because focused on majorily IT-related thinking and work!
